What is a Legal Entity Identifier (LEI)

A Legal Entity Identification Number (LEI) is a unique global identification number based on ISO Standard 17442:2012.  It is used by Financial institutions and regulators to identify businesses operating in the UK and European financial markets. It is designed to increase transparency and add efficiency to the company verification process and help boost investor confidence.  The LEI system has been created and supported by the GLEIF Foundation and is globally recognised as the strongest and most effective form of business identity when trading internationally and locally.

When issued the LEI number is active for 1 year only from the date of issue and must be renewed on an annual basis.
